Russia claims control of the Ukrainian city of Malitpol

International: Russia’s Defense Ministry claims that its army has captured the southern Ukrainian city of Malitpol after seizing the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Russia’s Reuters news agency quoted the ministry as saying.

Earlier, the TASS news agency reported that Russian troops had entered the town in the Zaporizhzhya region of Ukraine. At the time, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Russians were fighting a fierce battle with their troops in the city.

Malitpol is a city of medium size. Its location is near the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol, the BBC reported.

CNN reports that several large explosions were heard from the air base in the town of Malitpol.

This is the first time since the Russian aggression began on Thursday that the country has demanded control of a Ukrainian city.

The town of Malitpol is home to an estimated 150,000 people.
